Building Design Consultant Stresses Efficiency, Cyber Security; Records 194% Revenue Growth
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 12, 2015) – Intelligent Buildings, LLC, a nationally recognized smart real estate advisory services company, has been ranked among the nation’s fastest-growing private companies on the 2015 Inc. 5000 list, the magazine announced today.
Intelligent Buildings recorded three-year revenue growth of 194%, comparing 2011 to 2014, ranking the company No. 2,034 on Inc.’s annual list.
Founded in 2004, Intelligent Buildings is a recognized leader in smart-building consulting and has worked extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada in over 85 different cities, along with consulting and market research in the Middle East, Asia and Central America.
The company, led by co-founders Tom Shircliff and Rob Murchison, is the nationally recognized expert in the emerging field of building analytics and energy fault detection and has also developed smart building standards for the U.S. and Canadian federal governments.
Most recently, Intelligent Buildings is helping commercial real estate owners and operators guard against the emerging threat of cyber attacks. Because computers that control critical building operations are increasingly connected to the Internet, the buildings are vulnerable to cyber attacks that could disable life-safety systems such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems and elevators, damage temperature-sensitive equipment, or “hop over” to hack into corporate computer networks.
“Our fast growth is really a testament to the increasing awareness by the real estate community of both the opportunities and risks that technology has created, which is particularly important today as our nation’s buildings are increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks,” said Mr. Shircliff, the founding chairman of Envision Charlotte, a Clinton Global Initiative that is reducing energy consumption in uptown buildings.
“We are honored to be included in such prestigious company, which we hope raises awareness about the importance of assuring the nation’s skyscrapers and other buildings are built and operated with technology-current methods that ensure risk mitigation as well as energy and operational efficiency,” said Mr. Murchison, who also is an instructor for smart buildings and smart cities at Harvard Graduate School of Design Executive Education.
The Inc. 5000 list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy – American’s independent entrepreneurs. Companies such as Yelp, Pandora, Timberland, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, LinkedIn, Zillow and many other well-known names gained early exposure on the magazine’s list, in its 34th year.
The complete list is available online at www.inc.com/5000 and companies on the list will be honored at the Inc. 5000 conference and awards ceremony October 21 through 23, 2015 in Orlando.

(Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2011 is $100,000; the minimum for 2014 is $2 million.
